Haaland Sets Record as Manchester City Triumph Over Napoli
Erling Haaland has set a new record by becoming the fastest player to score 50 goals in the UEFA Champions League, as Manchester City secured a hard-fought victory against Napoli in their opening match.
Haaland achieved this milestone in just 49 matches, scoring with a header in the second half to help City claim three points. Meanwhile, Kevin De Bruyne's much-anticipated return to the Etihad Stadium ended prematurely, as he was substituted after just 26 minutes.
De Bruyne, who left City in the summer after a successful ten-year tenure, received a warm welcome from the home crowd. However, his joy was short-lived as he was taken off in the first half by manager Antonio Conte, following the dismissal of captain Giovanni di Lorenzo for bringing down Haaland as the last defender.
As expected, City dominated possession, but Pep Guardiola must have been frustrated that his side did not lead at half-time, given the number of chances they created. Napoli's goalkeeper, Vanja Milinkovic-Savic, was in exceptional form, making several outstanding saves, including stops against Tijjani Reijnders, Phil Foden, and Rodri.
Milinkovic-Savic also denied headers from Nico O'Reilly and Ruben Dias, and miraculously kept out Reijnders' deflected shot on the goal line during the first half.
However, 11 minutes into the second half, City finally broke through as Haaland connected with Foden's clever pass to nod in the opener. Jeremy Doku added a second goal, sealing the victory and leaving former Manchester United players Scott McTominay and Rasmus Hojlund disappointed in their return to Manchester.

Guardiola's 17th season as manager in the Champions League commenced with a victory as City aims to rebound from last season's disappointment when they failed to reach the top eight and were eliminated in the playoff stage.
Before facing Napoli, City had struggled in this tournament, losing five of their previous seven matches. At times during the game, it seemed they might be left frustrated by Milinkovic-Savic's performance. However, with Haaland in the lineup, City possesses a player who consistently finds the back of the net, and he is determined to make an impact, bringing his tally to six goals in five games this season.
Haaland's header from Foden's exquisite pass just before the hour mark relieved the tension in the stadium as he comfortably surpassed Ruud van Nistelrooy's record of reaching 50 goals in 62 matches.
Analysis: Napoli's Return of Former United Players Falls Flat
De Bruyne had hoped to orchestrate City's downfall upon his return, but his plans quickly turned into a nightmare. Di Lorenzo received a straight red card for tripping Haaland just outside the area, a decision confirmed by a pitchside review by the referee.
When the fourth official's board displayed De Bruyne's number 11, he was visibly shocked, walking off the pitch with his head down as the home crowd chanted his name.
Similarly, Hojlund and McTominay had a forgettable return to Manchester, becoming peripheral figures in the match after Napoli was reduced to ten men.
Napoli did create a decent opportunity when the score was still level, but a towering header from center-back Sam Beukema was saved brilliantly by Gianluigi Donnarumma.
This match marked Napoli's first setback of the season, extending their dismal record in European competitions against English teams to 13 matches without a victory.
