Haiti Qualifies for World Cup for Second Time Despite Manager's Absence
Haiti has secured a 2-0 victory over Nicaragua, earning their place in only their second-ever World Cup, despite their manager never having set foot in the Caribbean nation.
The team's 52-year-old French coach, Sébastien Migne, has been unable to visit Haiti since his appointment 18 months ago due to ongoing conflicts in the country. As a result, the team has been forced to play its home matches 500 miles away in Curacao, an island nation located just off the coast of Venezuela.
Since the devastating earthquake in 2010, Haiti has faced significant turmoil. Armed gangs have taken control of much of the capital, Port-au-Prince, leading to the displacement of approximately 1.3 million people and contributing to a severe hunger crisis.
Travel advisories warn against visiting the nation of 12 million due to risks of kidnappings, crime, terrorist activity, and civil unrest. Migne commented, "It’s impossible because it’s too dangerous. I usually live in the countries where I work, but I can’t here. There are no more international flights landing there," he told France Football magazine.
Despite the challenges, Migne has managed the team remotely, relying on information about local players from officials of the Haitian football federation via telephone. "They provided me with information, and I managed the team from afar," he explained.
The squad is entirely composed of foreign-based players, including Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, a midfielder born in France who currently plays for Wolves. They are also hoping to recruit Wilson Isidor, a forward for Sunderland born in France to Haitian parents.
Haiti's victory over Nicaragua guarantees their participation in the upcoming World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, marking their first appearance in the tournament since 1974.
They will be joined by Panama, who defeated El Salvador 3-0, and World Cup debutant Curacao, which qualified after a draw with Jamaica, as part of the Concacaf region.
In their only previous World Cup appearance, Haiti faced defeats against Italy, Poland, and Argentina, resulting in an early exit from the tournament.
