Harrison Bettoni Secures FA Cup Victory for Wigan Athletic
Teenager Harrison Bettoni scored the decisive goal for League One side Wigan Athletic in their FA Cup third-round match against Championship promotion contenders Preston North End.
The match, which saw limited scoring opportunities for much of the time, was decided with just 15 minutes left on the clock. Bettoni skillfully cut inside from the right wing, and his left-footed shot deflected off Andrew Hughes into the net.
Wigan had a chance to extend their lead when Callum Wright missed a penalty, striking the crossbar after Pol Valentin fouled Maleace Asamoah in the box. However, Wright's miss did not prove costly, as the Latics secured a victorious return to Deepdale for their former Preston manager, Ryan Lowe.
Late drama ensued as goalkeeper Sam Tickle made a remarkable save against Alfie Devine's glancing header, and a follow-up attempt by Brad Potts was ruled offside.
Wigan, who were FA Cup winners in 2013, had previously navigated through penalty shootouts to defeat non-league Hemel Hempstead Town and fourth-tier Barrow in the earlier rounds. Bettoni's goal ensured they avoided a similar fate against a Preston team ranked 35 places higher in the league hierarchy.
Preston manager Paul Heckingbottom made seven changes to the starting lineup that secured a 2-0 victory over Bristol City on Sunday. Despite being FA Cup quarter-finalists last season and currently sitting fourth in the Championship, his team struggled to find an attacking rhythm.
Substitutes Milutin Osmajic, Michael Smith, and Devine were brought on prior to Bettoni's goal, with Devine forcing Tickle into his only significant saves of the match.
Wigan came close to scoring twice in the opening 15 minutes, with Wright narrowly missing a header from Joe Hungbo's first-minute cross and Dara Costelloe sending his shot wide after being set up by Bettoni.
After taking the lead, substitute Asamoah posed a significant threat, but his attempt to score was thwarted by Preston goalkeeper Daniel Iversen after he broke free from the defense.
