Huddersfield Town Parts Ways with Manager Lee Grant
Huddersfield Town has parted ways with manager Lee Grant following Saturday's 3-1 defeat to Burton Albion.
The 42-year-old Grant was appointed by the League One club in May on a three-year contract, marking his first managerial role after three years on the coaching staff at Ipswich Town.
With aspirations of securing promotion back to the Championship on their second attempt, the club revamped its squad over the summer and initially enjoyed a promising start, achieving five wins in their first seven league matches.
However, consistency has eluded them since then, and Saturday's loss left them 10 points adrift of the top two teams, sitting in sixth place.
“Entering this season with renewed optimism and hope after proactively reshaping our first team throughout the summer, we were clear about our ambitions and how we wanted to achieve them, as well as the type of team we wanted to present to our supporters,” said Huddersfield owner Kevin Nagle.
“Unfortunately, given our current form, we are not meeting any of those objectives, and with just under half of the season remaining, we felt it was necessary to make a change to get the team back on track.
“I would like to thank Lee for his efforts and wish him all the best in his future career. Our previously stated aims and desires for the season remain unchanged, and we will be making a change with those ambitions firmly in mind.”
Huddersfield Town is now the seventh League One side to change managers this season.
Grant's departure means that Carlos Corberan, who managed the team during the 2021-22 season, remains the last Terriers boss to complete a full season in charge.
Since Corberan's exit, the club has seen seven different managers come and go in West Yorkshire.
Grant took over at Huddersfield after three years as part of Kieran McKenna's coaching staff at Ipswich. He worked to reshape a squad that finished 10th last season.
The club made significant signings, including Birmingham striker Alfie May for over £1 million, along with experienced Championship players Jack Whatmough, Ryan Ledson, and Lynden Gooch.
This recruitment and the ambitions of American owner Nagle positioned the club as pre-season favorites for promotion, and they started the campaign impressively with a 3-0 victory at home against Leyton Orient, last season's play-off finalists.
Despite being third in the standings when they faced local rivals Bradford City on September 13, they suffered a 3-1 defeat at Valley Parade and have not regained that position since.
While they have spent much of the season either in or just outside the top six, they now find themselves 16 points behind leaders Cardiff, having played one game more.
Next Saturday, they will host third-placed Bradford City, hoping to end a four-match winless streak.
