Despite dominating possession in the early stages, Southampton fell behind when Kyle Joseph capitalized on a rebound after Gavin Bazunu deflected a header into his path.
The Saints started the second half with renewed vigor but struggled to create clear chances. Their inability to convert opportunities was punished when John Lundstram scored his first goal since joining Hull City this summer.
Oli McBurnie sealed the match for Hull City with a powerful header, extending their lead to three goals with 20 minutes remaining. Adam Armstrong managed to net a consolation goal for Southampton in stoppage time.
Hull City, who had only secured one win prior to this match, climbed to 13th place in the standings, surpassing Southampton, who now sit in 19th, just two points above the relegation zone.
