Dramatic Late Victory for Southampton Over Wrexham in Championship Opener
Newly-promoted Wrexham faced a heartbreaking defeat in their Championship debut against Southampton, who scored two late goals to secure a thrilling victory for Will Still in his first match as head coach.
Southampton, relegated from the Premier League last season, spent most of the game trailing. However, they equalized in the 90th minute when Ryan Manning curled in a stunning 20-yard free-kick, followed by Jack Stephens netting the winner six minutes into injury time.
With six of their eight summer signings in the starting lineup, Wrexham appeared to be comfortable at this level and took a deserved lead when Josh Windass converted a penalty after Kieffer Moore was fouled by Ronnie Edwards.
The visitors could have extended their lead further, as Windass struck the crossbar and both Conor Coady and Lewis Brunt missed excellent scoring opportunities, while Jay Robinson hit the post for Southampton.
Although the first half was filled with chances at both ends, the second half saw Southampton dominate possession and gradually take control of the match.
The introduction of Mateus Fernandes – one of several Southampton players linked with potential transfers – helped the home side apply pressure, ultimately leading to Manning's equalizer.
Southampton continued to push forward, and Stephens scored from Manning's low cross, igniting jubilant celebrations at a packed St Mary's Stadium and providing Still, the highly-rated 32-year-old former Lens head coach, with a remarkable start to his tenure on the south coast.
For Wrexham, this match was another memorable chapter for the Hollywood-owned club, even though they could not secure the victory, as they aim to build on their unprecedented three consecutive promotions.
Main Talking Point
Just two years ago, Southampton was four divisions above Wrexham. The Saints concluded their 2022-23 Premier League campaign with a thrilling 4-4 draw against Liverpool, while Wrexham finished their National League season with a 1-1 draw at Torquay United.
In front of a sold-out crowd at St Mary's Stadium, the two teams met as equals, a testament to Southampton's disappointing relegation last season and Wrexham's historic three consecutive promotions.
Both squads underwent significant changes over the summer, and further alterations are expected. Wrexham has recorded the highest net spend in the Championship thus far, while Southampton retains a wealth of top-flight talent despite several notable departures.
Given the caliber of their opponents, Wrexham's new signings demonstrated impressive cohesion. However, despite being behind for most of the match, it was Southampton's day.
Still aims to return the club to the Championship at the first attempt, and while he will look to improve on this performance, the determination shown by his team bodes well for the long season ahead.
Player Highlights
Wrexham's new signings contributed significantly to a strong team performance, with Coady making crucial defensive interventions, Lewis O'Brien showcasing tenacity in midfield, and Moore displaying excellent hold-up play up front.
Windass was particularly influential, consistently finding space in attack and using it effectively, whether through passing or shooting. He hit the crossbar with a curling effort from 20 yards and played the pass to Moore that led to the penalty, which he confidently converted for his debut goal.
Southampton improved as the match progressed, with substitutes Fernandes and Manning making a substantial impact, especially Manning, who scored the equalizer and provided the assist for the winning goal.
Additionally, Southampton goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu deserves mention for a crucial save from Ryan Hardie when the hosts were still trailing 1-0, just moments before Manning's equalizer.
