International Footballer Arrested on Assault Charges in London
An international footballer has been arrested in central London on suspicion of assault and affray.
According to police, the incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday in the West End.
The 29-year-old player was taken into custody at the scene on charges of two counts of assault and one count of affray. Due to legal restrictions, his name cannot be disclosed.
Police informed BBC Sport that they were alerted to the incident at 00:47 GMT on Saturday following reports of an assault. The alleged victim was transported to the hospital with injuries that authorities believe are neither life-changing nor life-threatening.
The player has been released on bail while investigations are ongoing. In the UK, the names of individuals arrested are rarely published or confirmed by law enforcement.
This policy was established following the Leveson Inquiry into the British media in 2012, which recommended that arrested suspects should only be named in "exceptional and clearly identified circumstances." Typically, a name is released only if formal charges are filed.
