Former Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez has expressed deep regret for the sexist remarks that resulted in a fine and a warning regarding his future conduct.
The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) reported that the 37-year-old, currently playing for Liga MX side Chivas, made statements on TikTok that were deemed to promote sexist stereotypes, considered media violence, and contrary to gender equality in sports.
Hernandez remarked that women are "failing" and "eradicating masculinity" and advised women "not to be afraid to be women, to allow themselves to be led by a man," via social media.
In an apology posted on Instagram on Thursday, Hernandez stated it was "never my intention" to "hurt or divide."
"I deeply regret any confusion or discomfort that my recent words have caused," Hernandez added. He, who achieved two Premier League titles during his five-year tenure at United, emphasized that he is "listening, reflecting, and committed to expressing myself with better clarity and sensitivity," and he intends to "take this opportunity to understand, grow, and continue working to be a better version of myself."
The comments, made last weekend, sparked backlash in Mexico.
President Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico's first female president, commented: "Chicharito is a very good soccer player, but when it comes to his opinion on women, he still has a lot to learn."
In a joint statement, the FMF and Mexico's top men's and women's leagues announced that the Gender and Diversity Commission has initiated an investigation "to prevent and punish this behavior," warning of "more severe measures in the event of a repeat offense."
Chivas stated that the comments were "contrary to the principles and values" of the club, and they had taken "appropriate action" against Hernandez, though specifics were not disclosed.
Hernandez, Mexico's all-time leading scorer, initially joined Manchester United from Chivas in 2010. He later played for Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen before returning to the Premier League in 2017 with West Ham for three seasons. Following his stint at West Ham, he joined Sevilla, then spent four seasons with MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy. In 2023, he returned to his first club, Chivas, signing a two-year deal.
