Former Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez has been fined and warned regarding his future conduct following sexist remarks made on social media.
The Mexican Football Federation reported that the 37-year-old, currently playing for Liga MX team Chivas, made comments "promoting sexist stereotypes" on TikTok.
On social media, Hernandez claimed that women are "failing" and "eradicating masculinity." He advised women not to fear being led by men.
The comments, made last weekend, sparked backlash in Mexico. President Claudia Sheinbaum, the country's first female president, remarked, "Chicharito is a very good soccer player, but when it comes to his opinion on women, he still has a lot to learn."
Chivas stated that Hernandez's comments were "contrary to the principles and values" of the club and mentioned that they had taken "appropriate action" against him, though they did not specify the measures.
Hernandez, Mexico's all-time leading scorer, joined Manchester United from Chivas in 2010. During his four years at Old Trafford, he won the Premier League twice.
Following stints with Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen, he returned to the Premier League with West Ham, where he played for three seasons from 2017 to 2020. Hernandez then joined Sevilla from West Ham before spending four seasons with MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy. He returned to Chivas in 2023, signing a two-year contract.
