Jayson Molumby Expresses Disappointment Over International Selection
Midfielder Jayson Molumby expressed feelings of anger and disappointment after not being selected for the Republic of Ireland during the last international window.
The West Bromwich Albion player was absent from Heimir Halgrimsson's squad for the opening World Cup qualifiers, which included a home draw against Hungary and a 2-0 loss away to Armenia.
Included in the squad for the upcoming October matches against Portugal and Armenia, Molumby aims to translate his club form onto the international stage and make a significant impact.
"It’s nice to be back; it was tough for me. I was gutted not to be selected, and it was hard to watch the game against Armenia," he shared.
"You feel a lot of emotions—angry and disappointed. I didn’t receive a specific reason for my exclusion; there are many players to choose from, and the coaching staff seemed focused on those they selected.
"I feel I’ve started the season well; I’ve played in all the league games for West Brom and am in a good place."
The 26-year-old last represented his country in November 2024, earning a total of 29 caps.
With Jason Knight sidelined due to injury and Killian Phillips not included in the squad, Molumby is keen to secure a starting position in midfield alongside Josh Cullen.
"You have to back yourself. My strengths are my passion, dedication, and hard work," he added.
"I feel like I don’t get enough credit for my technical ability. I may not be extraordinarily technical, but I can manage myself well and believe I’m capable of playing at this level. I often feel overlooked in terms of that aspect of my game.
"I believe I can contribute. I’m not here to assert that I should be playing for the Republic of Ireland; it hasn’t been a successful period for the team since I joined, and I haven’t achieved much or won a significant away match. I have faith in my abilities, but it’s challenging when results haven’t gone our way."
