Linfield Advances to European Playoff Round with Victory Over Vikingur
Linfield has set up a European rematch with Shelbourne after defeating Vikingur 3-2 on aggregate in their UEFA Conference League third qualifying round tie at Windsor Park.
A stunning strike from Kieran Offord and an own goal by Ari Olsen enabled the Irish Premiership champions to overturn their 2-1 defeat in the Faroe Islands just a week prior.
Linfield will now face Shelbourne for the second time in quick succession, following the Dublin club's elimination of David Healy's side from the Champions League in their previous encounter last month.
The winner of this two-legged clash will advance to the league phase of the Conference League, with Linfield aiming to replicate Larne's achievement of reaching that stage in the previous season.
Offord Shines Again
Linfield had an early opportunity when full-back Ingi Armgrimasson slipped on the slick surface, allowing Matthew Fitzpatrick to charge toward goal. However, his powerful angled shot was parried away by goalkeeper Bardur Reynatreo.
At the other end, Jakup Johansen pursued a long ball from Vikingur, managing to fend off Ben Hall and enter the penalty area, but his shot was comfortably saved by Chris Johns.
Johansen remained a threat as Vikingur launched another attack, running onto a through ball before sending a shot just wide of Johns' far post.
The home side broke the deadlock in style on 22 minutes with a spectacular goal from the in-form Offord. The Scottish striker, who netted a hat-trick in Linfield's league opener over the weekend, collected the ball from a distance, skillfully maneuvered past two defenders, and unleashed a powerful strike from outside the penalty area that left Reynatreo grasping at thin air.
Linfield struck the woodwork twice within a couple of minutes; first, Charlie Allen's deflected shot hit the base of the post, and moments later, another thunderous effort from Offord struck the underside of the crossbar and bounced clear just in front of the goal line.
Linfield took the lead in the tie for the first time on 38 minutes when Offord, clean through on goal, had his chipped attempt saved, but the loose ball was inadvertently directed into his own net by the unfortunate Olsen.
The home side endured a late first-half scare as Johns had to block a shot from Johansen at the back post, and shortly after, Poul Kallsberg rattled the crossbar from the edge of the penalty area.
Vikingur posed a threat in the second half when Arnbjarn Svensson connected with a free-kick, forcing Johns into a full-length save that resulted in a head injury, necessitating his substitution for David Walsh.
Despite this setback, Linfield held on to secure their place in the playoff round for the first time since 2022, when they narrowly lost on penalties to Latvian side RFS.
