Shelbourne Secures Two-Goal Advantage in Uefa Conference League Play-Off
Shelbourne holds a two-goal advantage heading into the second leg of their UEFA Conference League play-off following an exhilarating 3-1 victory against 10-man Linfield at Tolka Park.
The match in Dublin was a captivating display of football, featuring four goals, three penalties, and a red card.
Harry Wood's penalty just before half-time gave the hosts the lead against Linfield, who were reduced to 10 men early in the match. Mipo Odubeko then doubled Shelbourne's advantage less than a minute into the second half.
Odubeko had previously missed a penalty in the first half when the score was still 0-0.
Linfield's Kieran Offord managed to pull one back for the visitors in the second half but squandered a chance to equalize from the penalty spot.
Substitute Evan Caffrey sealed the victory for Shelbourne with a close-range goal 13 minutes from the end of the match.
Penalty Drama at Tolka
Linfield, who had lost the first leg of their Champions League qualifier at Tolka Park just a month ago, found themselves down a player in the first half, as Matthew Fitzpatrick was sent off after 18 minutes for a high foot that caught Milan Mbeng.
Three minutes before the break, the hosts were awarded a penalty, but Odubeko missed the opportunity, sending the ball over the crossbar. However, just four minutes later, Shelbourne was given another chance from the spot after Ben Hall's late challenge in the area. Wood stepped up and converted the penalty with confidence.
Less than a minute into the second half, Shelbourne extended their lead. Caffrey, who had just come on, played a crucial role by setting up Odubeko, who made amends for his earlier miss by scoring from inside the box.
Linfield found a glimmer of hope seven minutes later when Kirk Millar's corner was flicked on by Sam Roscoe, allowing Offord to nod the ball home from close range.
David Healy's side then had a chance to equalize from the penalty spot after Patrick Barrett's handball, but Offord's attempt was thwarted by goalkeeper Wessel Speel, who made a fantastic save diving to his left.
Caffrey capped off the evening with a third goal for Shelbourne, ensuring that the north Dublin club takes a two-goal lead into the second leg in Belfast next Thursday.
