Liverpool Faces Challenges Following Defeat to Galatasaray
Liverpool's players were disturbed by fireworks set off outside their hotel in Istanbul, but it is their second consecutive loss that should serve as the true wake-up call.
While the Premier League champions currently sit atop the league table, warning signs of vulnerability have emerged during the early weeks of their season, culminating in a 1-0 defeat to Galatasaray in the Champions League.
Head coach Arne Slot, who succeeded Jurgen Klopp and enjoyed a smooth transition after an impressive title-winning campaign, is now facing significant challenges. Despite spending nearly £450 million in the summer transfer window, this season may turn out to be more transitional than anticipated, contrasting with the seamless takeover from Klopp following his arrival from Feyenoord.
Alexander Isak, who came on as a substitute in Turkey, is still working towards full match fitness after his contentious British record £125 million transfer from Newcastle United. Meanwhile, Florian Wirtz, acquired for £116 million from Bayer Leverkusen, appears to be struggling to adapt to Liverpool's pace.
Slot's decision-making was also called into question during the match. His choice to leave Mohamed Salah on the bench backfired, as the Egyptian's introduction in the second half came too late to turn the tide against a Galatasaray side that had already seized control.
The last time Salah was benched for a Champions League match was against Rangers in October 2022, and it seems likely that Slot will think twice before making such a decision again.
Liverpool's vulnerabilities were evident once more, as Galatasaray exploited their weaknesses effectively, guided by coach Okan Buruk. The warning signs were apparent early in the match when Baris Alper Yilmaz broke through unchallenged, only for goalkeeper Alisson to save the day.
Slot's tactical choices raised eyebrows; new right-back Jeremie Frimpong was utilized as an attacker, while recognized midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai was shifted to defense. It was Szoboszlai who conceded the crucial penalty in the 16th minute, which Victor Osimhen converted amid a frenzied atmosphere.
As former Scotland winger Pat Nevin aptly noted on BBC Radio 5 Live, the performance was “so un-Liverpool.” Following their loss to Crystal Palace, facing Galatasaray in such a hostile environment was perhaps the last thing Liverpool needed.
Galatasaray's supporters created an electrifying atmosphere, gathering in large numbers hours before kickoff, and their fervent cheers and jeers intensified as the match progressed. Liverpool's misery was compounded when Alisson was forced off with injury in the 56th minute, and in-form striker Hugo Ekitike also limped off later in the game.
Has Wirtz Disrupted Liverpool's Balance?
One of the main concerns for Liverpool this season has been Wirtz's lack of impact. Despite being a player of notable talent, who garnered interest from Manchester City before choosing Liverpool, he has yet to make a significant mark. Playing in a withdrawn role behind Ekitike, Wirtz only managed one shot on goal that forced a save from Galatasaray's goalkeeper, leaving him still searching for his first goal with the club.
Even top players often require time to acclimate, and Liverpool fans hope for a spark from their £116 million signing sooner rather than later. As Nevin remarked, there appears to be confusion regarding Wirtz's role and the team's overall strategy, which seemed effective before his introduction.
Slot's transition from a well-established Liverpool side to one integrating multiple new players has not gone smoothly. The inclusion of Wirtz seems to have exposed the team defensively, with Liverpool appearing less secure than last season. They have conceded late goals in several matches and have struggled to maintain clean sheets, having only achieved two in ten games this season compared to six in the same timeframe last year.
Former Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge noted that the team is not performing at the same level as last year, indicating a lack of chemistry that needs to be addressed. However, he emphasized that there is still time to rectify these issues.
Slot remained composed in his assessment, stating, “We are not far off the level we showed last season. The margins are small, and we are on the wrong side of them for the second consecutive time. Galatasaray is not an easy opponent, and we must now face Chelsea away, which will be another difficult challenge.”
Despite the setbacks, the calm control that characterized Liverpool's title-winning season seems to have been lost, leaving fans to wonder how quickly the team can regain their composure.
