Manchester City Manager Confirms Rayan Cherki Out for Two Months Due to Injury
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has announced that French midfielder Rayan Cherki will be sidelined for two months due to injury.
The 22-year-old joined Manchester City in June for an initial fee of £30.45 million from Ligue 1 club Lyon. He made an impressive start by scoring on his Premier League debut during a 4-0 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers, but he was unable to help the team in their recent match against Tottenham.
Cherki missed Sunday’s match, where City suffered their second consecutive defeat, losing 2-1 to Brighton.
In his absence, Liverpool forward Hugo Ekitike has been called up to replace Cherki in Didier Deschamps’ France squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in September.
According to a post from France's official X account, Cherki is dealing with a "quadriceps tear."
This injury will prevent him from participating in the first Manchester derby of the new season on Sunday, September 14.
Prior to his transfer to City, Cherki was part of the Lyon team that faced Manchester United in a thrilling Europa League match, which ended in a 5-4 defeat for Lyon.
After signing with City, Cherki expressed his determination to defeat Manchester United in their next encounter. "I didn’t like it when Manchester United won against Lyon because I am a Lyonnais. Now I am looking forward to the game to take my revenge," he stated.
