Manchester United's Bendito Mantato Makes Senior Debut
Bendito Mantato, an England under-18 international, made his debut for Manchester United during the 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on Tuesday at Old Trafford.
The 17-year-old is the latest academy talent to receive playing time from manager Ruben Amorim this season, a decision influenced by the club's current injury crisis and the absence of three players participating in the Africa Cup of Nations.
Mantato joined Manchester United's academy in 2017 at the age of nine and has progressed through all age levels, representing England from under-15 to under-18 categories.
Although primarily a forward, Mantato has also played as a full-back. He came on as a substitute for Manuel Ugarte in the final 15 minutes against Wolves.
So far, Mantato has made 50 appearances for United across under-18 and under-21 competitions, as well as in the EFL Trophy, FA Youth Cup, and National League Cup.
The versatile player, of Angolan descent, first appeared on the senior bench during last season's Europa League semi-finals, although he did not play in the matches against Athletic Club.
Earlier this month, Mantato was included in the Premier League squad for the first time, sitting on the bench for games against Aston Villa and Newcastle before making his senior debut against Wolves.
In the National League Cup, he scored against Solihull Moors last month and also netted during United's FA Youth Cup quarter-final victory over Arsenal last season.
Analysis: 'Exceptionally Quick and Strong for His Age'
Mantato was Manchester United's only representative at the Under-17 World Cup in Qatar last November, where he interestingly played as a full-back rather than in his usual attacking role.
A local talent who has been at United's academy for a decade, he is noted for being exceptionally quick and strong for his age.
His dual ability to attack and defend likely influenced the decision to bring him on against Wolves instead of using a more traditional right-sided player like Shea Lacey.
Mantato signed his first professional contract in May, securing his future at Old Trafford until 2029.
