Martinelli's Hat-Trick Propels Arsenal to FA Cup Victory
Gabriel Martinelli netted a hat-trick as Arsenal overcame an early deficit to secure a convincing victory against Portsmouth at Fratton Park, advancing to the fourth round of the FA Cup.
Following surprising upsets earlier in the weekend involving Wrexham and Macclesfield, the Gunners, who made ten alterations to their starting lineup, found themselves trailing when Colby Bishop scored for the Championship side just three minutes into the match.
However, Arsenal responded quickly, equalizing within five minutes as Christian Norgaard converted a corner taken by the Gunners, with the ball deflecting off Portsmouth's Andre Dozzell.
This goal helped settle the visitors, who took the lead from another set-piece when Martinelli deftly flicked Noni Madueke's corner into the net in the 25th minute.
Madueke had an opportunity to extend the lead from the penalty spot after being fouled by Zak Swanson, but he misfired and sent the ball wide.
Despite hitting the post and missing another chance in the first half, Martinelli scored his second goal after Gabriel Jesus delivered a low cross into the box, allowing the Brazilian to tap in from close range.
He completed his hat-trick from yet another Arsenal corner, flicking the ball in from the near post.
In a notable moment, defender Marli Salmon made history by becoming the youngest player to represent Arsenal in the FA Cup at just 16 years and 135 days old.
Martinelli Shines for a Revamped Arsenal Squad
This season has been a rollercoaster for Martinelli, who faced criticism for a recent altercation with injured Liverpool defender Conor Bradley. However, his first hat-trick for Arsenal may provide the boost he needs as the club aims for major silverware, their first since winning the FA Cup in 2020.
Though Martinelli has lost his regular starting position in the Premier League, he has thrived in the Champions League, scoring in each of Arsenal's first four matches in the competition.
The competition for places has intensified this season, bolstered by eight summer signings, including forwards Madueke, Eberechi Eze, and Viktor Gyokeres. This depth allowed manager Mikel Arteta to make ten changes while still fielding a team that included Spain international Mikel Merino and England internationals Madueke and Eze.
Key centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes was the only player retained from the previous match against Liverpool. Merino, serving as captain for the day, was one of Arsenal's standout performers, effectively managing an unfamiliar deep-lying midfield role.
Alongside the positives of Martinelli's hat-trick and valuable minutes for squad players, Arteta welcomed back Kai Havertz, who made his return after a knee injury sidelined him since the season's opening day.
This match marks the first of four consecutive away games across different competitions for the Gunners, underscoring their successful season and the numerous opportunities that lie ahead.
