Memphis Depay Sets Assist Record in Netherlands' World Cup Qualifying Victory
Memphis Depay set a new record for the most assists for the Netherlands while also extending his own goalscoring tally in a decisive World Cup qualifying victory over Finland.
The 31-year-old forward assisted Aston Villa's Donyell Malen, who scored the opening goal from outside the box.
Depay then delivered a precise free-kick that Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk converted with a header, bringing the score to 2-0.
This marked Depay's 35th assist in an Oranje jersey, surpassing the previous record held by Wesley Sneijder by two assists.
The Corinthians forward capped off his outstanding performance by scoring a penalty in the 38th minute, effectively sealing the match at the Johan Cruyff Arena.
This goal was Depay's 54th for his country, further extending the national record he established last month.
Liverpool's Cody Gakpo added a late fourth goal, capitalizing on a pass from Tottenham's Xavi Simons.
After six matches, the Netherlands leads Group G by six points over Poland, who are set to play Lithuania later on Sunday, with Finland in third place.
