Middlesbrough overcame the potential loss of manager Rob Edwards to halt Birmingham City's recent resurgence.
Two first-half goals from Dael Fry and Hayden Hackney delighted Edwards's assistant, Adi Viveash, who stepped in to manage the match.
Prior to kick-off, Middlesbrough granted Wolves permission to speak with their manager, leaving Viveash in charge.
Birmingham entered the match in the north-east following two consecutive 4-0 victories at home against Portsmouth and Millwall. However, despite creating several opportunities, they could only manage a single goal from Demarai Gray in the 29th minute.
