Motherwell Seeks Clarity on Penalty Decision Ahead of Celtic Clash
Motherwell is seeking clarity regarding a rejected penalty claim during their recent match at Ibrox, although manager Jens Berthel Askou is eager to move past the incident.
Referee David Dickinson allowed play to continue when Lukas Fadinger went down following a challenge from Emmanuel Fernandez in the dying moments of their 1-0 defeat to Rangers. The game resumed quickly after the incident.
Askou remains convinced that Motherwell should have been awarded a penalty and has not wavered in his stance. Chief Executive Brian Caldwell has reached out to the Scottish Football Association’s referees department for further clarification.
"I haven’t spoken much to Brian since, but I believe it’s likely a matter of not having the camera angles that would support what we can clearly see from some of our photographers’ footage," said Askou.
"From various angles on the pitch, the situation speaks for itself. The communication between Brian and the referees should be an open and honest discussion.
"Eventually, they may provide comments on this matter, as they sometimes do, but I will leave that to them. For us, it’s a closed chapter; there’s nothing more we can do. We feel it was a wrong decision, and we stand by that.
"It doesn’t make sense to expend energy seeking explanations after the game. My priority is to ensure that we move forward. In football and in life, sometimes things beyond our control go our way, and sometimes they don’t. We have to accept that and move on. It was a tough one, but we can’t afford to dwell on it."
Askou is now focusing on the upcoming match against Celtic, set to take place at Fir Park on Tuesday, where he anticipates a tactical challenge against the opposing manager, Wilfried Nancy.
Celtic has secured two consecutive victories under Nancy, who initially faced four consecutive defeats but has yet to achieve a clean sheet since taking charge.
Motherwell conceded for the first time in seven matches during their loss at Ibrox, and they have failed to score in four of those encounters.
"It’s going to be a match between two dynamic teams with numerous rotations and intriguing challenges to tackle," remarked Askou.
"Tactically, it will be an exciting challenge for us to replicate the quality we displayed recently while aiming to be sharper when chances arise.
"Celtic is evolving as a team, finding more structure under Nancy's guidance, and they are beginning to score more goals. I can see they are looking sharper, more confident, and more natural, converting more chances into goals, which has boosted their morale. It will be a significant test for us to see if we can prevent them from scoring.
"There’s an element of risk and reward that we need to leverage to our advantage."
