Newcastle United Manager Discusses Squad Changes and Missing 'X-Factor'
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has acknowledged that the team is currently lacking an "X-factor," but he believes it is unfair to compare record signing Nick Woltemade with Alexander Isak.
The club has scored only three goals in its first five Premier League matches, with only Aston Villa registering fewer in the league.
Howe noted that Newcastle is "evolving" following Isak's British record transfer to Liverpool on deadline day, while new forwards Woltemade and Yoane Wissa joined the squad late in the transfer window.
"We have had the biggest change to the squad in my time here," Howe stated.
In an ideal scenario, he explained, a full six-week pre-season would allow the team to resolve any issues and build partnerships and relationships before the season begins. "We are now in a position where we will have to develop these as we play. I have no issue with that; I have done it before," he added.
Wissa, who recently transferred from Brentford for £55 million, sustained a knee injury while on international duty with the DR Congo and is expected to be sidelined until after the upcoming international break.
Woltemade, having never played outside Germany prior to his move, made an impressive debut by scoring against Wolves, but Howe emphasized that he will need time to adapt to the physicality of the Premier League.
Howe remarked that he "didn't think any comparison to Alex is favorable to any player." He expressed excitement about the potential of his team, stating, "We have certainly got things to learn about each other and formulas to try and generate that we know will work. The foundation is solid, and while the team is strong, we are just missing that X-factor that I believe will come. With the players we have, some are proven goal-scorers historically."
Isak's move to Liverpool was marked by controversy, as he went on strike to force the transfer, which extended until the last day of the transfer window. Howe had initially hoped to sign a striker sooner, but Newcastle faced several setbacks when Joao Pedro, Hugo Ekitike, and Benjamin Sesko chose to join other clubs.
Ahead of the Carabao Cup holders' third-round match against Bradford City on Wednesday, Howe remarked that it was never the intention to start the season with new players that would require molding during the ongoing matches. "That was never the thought of anyone connected to the club," he clarified. "It’s quite clear that the summer was difficult. We have tried to emerge from it as strong as we could, and I think we have."
