Nigeria Secures Narrow Victory Over Tanzania in Afcon Opener
Nigeria began their pursuit of a fourth Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) title with a hard-fought 2–1 victory against Tanzania in challenging wet conditions in Fes.
The Super Eagles took the lead in the 36th minute when defender Semi Ajayi headed home from an inviting right-wing cross delivered by Alex Iwobi.
During the first half, Nigeria largely controlled the game and came close to doubling their advantage before the break, but a deflected effort from Samuel Chukwueze was tipped over the bar by Tanzania's goalkeeper, Zuberi Foba.
Tanzania responded shortly after the restart, leveling the score in the 50th minute as Charles M'Mombwa side-footed in a lofted left-wing delivery from Novatus Miroshi.
Just two minutes later, former African Footballer of the Year Ademola Lookman restored Nigeria's lead, skillfully shifting the ball from his right to his left before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the top-right corner, securing all three points for Eric Chelle's side.
Nigeria will aim to secure early qualification for the round of 16 when they face Tunisia in their next Group C match in Fes on Saturday, while Tanzania will travel to Rabat for an all-East Africa encounter against Uganda.
