Northern Ireland Defenders Ruled Out of World Cup Qualifiers
Northern Ireland defenders Daniel Ballard and Brodie Spencer have been ruled out of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Luxembourg and Germany.
Ballard, who plays for Sunderland, was forced to leave the pitch during the first half of his team's 2-0 defeat to Burnley on Saturday. Meanwhile, Spencer suffered an injury during Oxford United's heavy 6-0 loss to Brighton in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.
This setback adds to the challenges faced by manager Michael O'Neill, who is already missing goalkeepers Pierce Charles and Conor Hazard, as well as defender Ciaron Brown and midfielder Jordan Thompson due to injuries.
In response, O'Neill has called up uncapped players Kofi Balmer, Ryan Johnson, and Jamie McDonnell as replacements and additional cover.
Kofi Balmer, 24, a defender with Motherwell, has made 20 appearances for Northern Ireland's Under-21 team and has been included in the senior squad six times without yet making his debut.
Ryan Johnson, a 28-year-old center-back with League One side AFC Wimbledon, receives his first senior call-up after previously representing Northern Ireland at the under-21 level.
Midfielder Jamie McDonnell is currently on loan at League One club Mansfield Town from Premier League side Nottingham Forest, who signed him from Irish Premiership club Glentoran in 2020. He has also played for Northern Ireland at the under-17 and under-21 levels.
Northern Ireland will kick off their World Cup qualifying campaign against Luxembourg on Thursday, September 4, before facing Germany in Cologne for their second Group A match on Sunday, September 7.
