Northern Ireland Faces Key Absences Ahead of World Cup Qualifiers
Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill will be without key midfielders Shea Charles and Ali McCann for this month's 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Slovakia and Luxembourg.
Shea Charles, a midfielder from Southampton, is sidelined due to a hamstring injury, while Ali McCann suffered a fractured arm while playing for Preston North End last month.
Additionally, Charles' younger brother, Pierce Charles, a goalkeeper for Sheffield Wednesday, is also unavailable due to a shoulder injury that has kept him out of Northern Ireland's last four matches.
Oxford United defender Brodie Spencer is another notable absentee, as O'Neill has promoted uncapped Barnsley midfielder Patrick Kelly from the under-21s to fill the gap in the squad.
The former West Ham player, who joined Barnsley this summer, has previously represented the under-21 team 12 times.
Northern Ireland currently sits third in Group A, trailing leaders Germany and second-place Slovakia by three points, with two games remaining in the qualifiers.
The team will face Slovakia in Košice on November 14, before concluding their campaign at home against Luxembourg three days later.
Swansea midfielder Ethan Galbraith is included in the squad but will be suspended for the first match of this double-header.

Absentees Challenge O'Neill's Tactical Options
While Conor Bradley and Isaac Price may attract more media attention, Shea Charles and Ali McCann have become central to the strategy that O'Neill has developed for the team.
O'Neill has previously noted that McCann is the player his team "misses the most when he’s not available," while Charles is recognized as a vital driving force in midfield and arguably the best passer in the squad. This skill is even more crucial given the absence of his brother's distribution from goal.
One possible solution could involve moving Justin Devenny or Paddy McNair—regular starters at left wing-back and center-back, respectively—into central midfield roles, though this would create gaps in other areas of the team.
If not for his own injury, Spencer would have been a prime candidate to fill in for Devenny on the left flank.
For the upcoming match against Slovakia, O'Neill must also consider who will replace Galbraith, as Northern Ireland will be without their entire starting midfield trio from the last four qualifiers.
With a limited player pool, these injuries will put Northern Ireland's depth to the test and challenge O'Neill's ability to devise creative solutions.
