Following Northern Ireland's impressive 2-0 victory over Slovakia in World Cup qualifying on Friday evening, manager Michael O'Neill was cautious about singling out any individual for excessive praise. However, goalscorer Trai Hume was quick to highlight the exceptional performance of his teammate Conor Bradley.
"Conor Bradley was the best player on the pitch by a mile, in my opinion," remarked Hume, whose first international goal secured vital points for the team. Midfielder Shea Charles echoed this sentiment, calling Bradley's display "unbelievable."
Bradley, who made his Northern Ireland debut before turning 18, earned his 28th cap and third as captain during the match, which keeps the team in contention for a spot in next summer's tournament in North America. The 22-year-old showcased his leadership and skill, driving at the Slovakian defense and effectively leading the team’s pressing efforts.
Despite the positive outcome, a setback emerged for Northern Ireland as Bradley received a yellow card in the second half, which will sideline him for the upcoming match against Germany. This leaves the team without one of their standout players.
Bradley had a challenging start to the 2025-26 season after missing the first three matches due to injury. The only game in which he played more than 45 minutes was the Merseyside derby against Everton. However, he displayed no signs of rust against Slovakia, contributing significantly to Northern Ireland's energetic performance.
O'Neill praised Bradley’s ability to play aggressively for his country, describing his performance as "terrific" and "outstanding." The connection between Bradley and Swansea City’s Ethan Galbraith was a key feature of the first half, leading to an own goal by Patrik Hrosovsky after a clever exchange of passes.
'He’s 100% all the time'
Now, Northern Ireland faces the challenge of competing against the group favorites without their best player. Bradley received his second yellow card of the qualifying campaign for a tackle on Lukas Haraslin, a decision O'Neill found "extremely disappointing," noting that he believed Bradley attempted to withdraw from the challenge.
Former Northern Ireland and Leeds United defender Stuart Dallas commented that while Bradley gave the referee a decision to make, he also agreed with O'Neill that the card was harsh. The suspension adds another layer of complexity as O'Neill strategizes for the crucial match against Germany.
While there is no direct replacement for Bradley in the squad, Oxford United’s Brodie Spencer is expected to step in at right wing-back. Hume expressed confidence in the team's resilience, stating, "Conor is going to be a big miss, but we’re a big group, we’re a strong team and we’re all together. It’s something we have to deal with and we’ll be ready."
