Nottingham Forest's Struggles Continue as Sunderland Secures Victory
Ange Postecoglou's challenging start as Nottingham Forest's head coach continued on Saturday, as Omar Alderete's first-half goal secured a victory for Sunderland at the City Ground.
Since his appointment on September 9, the former Spurs boss has experienced a tough run, losing three and drawing two of his first five matches in charge, with this defeat marking his first home game with Forest.
The hosts felt aggrieved by the nature of Sunderland's winning goal, which came from a free-kick awarded after Nicolas Dominguez was penalized for simulation during a clash with Trai Hume while attempting to clear the ball.
Grant Xhaka delivered the set-piece, and Alderete managed to direct the ball into the net.
Just before halftime, Dan Ndoye nearly equalized with a deflected shot, while Chris Wood headed over the bar.
In the second half, Elliot Anderson curled a shot just over the crossbar as Forest sought an equalizer. Sunderland's Robin Roefs, who has been impressive this season, made crucial saves from Omari Hutchinson, Igor Jesus, and a long-range effort from Anderson.
Despite their pressure, Forest could not find the net, and Sunderland's victory marked their third win of the season, propelling them to third place in the table. Nottingham Forest, on the other hand, sits in 16th place, with only one win from their first six Premier League matches.
Forest Analysis: Postecoglou Faces Challenges but Sees Positives
There has been a mixed reaction among Forest supporters regarding Postecoglou's appointment as Nuno Espirito Santo's successor. The Australian coach led Spurs to a Europa League title in May, but their poor Premier League performance last season left them just above the relegation zone.
A quirk in the fixture list meant that Postecoglou's first four matches at Forest were all away. Although he did not secure a victory in any of these games, they included a loss to last season's runners-up, Arsenal, and a draw against Burnley, who had an impressive defensive record during their promotion to the Premier League.
The only significant disappointment was their Carabao Cup exit to Swansea, and they will be puzzled as to how they failed to score in this match. In the second half, they created numerous chances but were either thwarted by Roefs's excellent form or missed the target altogether.
Five games without a win is undoubtedly a poor start for any head coach, but there are encouraging signs that results may improve.
Sunderland Analysis: Strong Start Continues
Sunderland supporters joyfully lingered after the final whistle to celebrate their first away win in the Premier League since 2017. After spending eight years in League One, they have successfully rebuilt and already appear to belong in the top flight just six games into their return.
Despite facing significant pressure, particularly in a second half dominated by Forest, Sunderland executed an ideal away performance, holding firm after taking the lead to secure another three points.
Granit Xhaka showcased his value with a commanding display in midfield, while goalkeeper Robin Roefs consistently frustrated the opposition with outstanding saves.
