Nottingham Forest Appoints Ange Postecoglou Following Nuno Espirito Santo's Departure
Nuno Espirito Santo's tenure at Nottingham Forest has come to an end amid a series of unexpected public remarks from the typically reserved Portuguese manager.
After nearly a month of uncertainty, his 21-month reign concluded abruptly with an early morning announcement.
Forest acted swiftly in naming Ange Postecoglou as his successor, making the appointment within 13 hours of Nuno's departure.
Nuno had voiced concerns about the slow pace of the club's transfer activities and indicated that his relationship with owner Evangelos Marinakis had soured since last season. Despite a significant summer expenditure of approximately £180 million on 11 players, Nuno was dissatisfied with the timing of their arrivals, which hindered their integration into the squad.
When questioned about the stability of his position before a recent Premier League match against Crystal Palace, Nuno remarked, "Where there's smoke, there's fire," which likely exacerbated tensions.
In August, sources indicated that Postecoglou, who was dismissed by Tottenham in June despite leading them to success in the Europa League, was a leading candidate to take over. Discussions with the Australian intensified over the last few weeks as Nuno's position became increasingly precarious.
The trust between Nuno and Marinakis deteriorated following his public criticisms, and attempts to mend the relationship proved difficult. Additionally, friction existed between Nuno and global sporting director Edu, yet the coach could have chosen to address these issues privately.
Ultimately, Nuno's public outbursts were deemed disruptive, undermining Forest's preparations for the upcoming season and their first European campaign in 30 years.
Internally, there was disappointment over how Nuno's tenure ended. He was well-liked and had fostered a strong relationship with the club, leading them from a relegation battle to a seventh-place finish in the league, narrowly missing out on Champions League qualification.
Despite a four-point deduction for breaching Profit and Sustainability rules, Nuno successfully steered Forest away from relegation, achieving a surprising seventh-place finish last season.
However, following discussions during the international break and a disappointing 3-0 home defeat to West Ham, which marked the worst performance of his reign, the decision was made to part ways.
The timing of the announcement, made at 00:15 on Tuesday, was influenced by reports breaking in Portugal, Nuno's home country. While Forest would have preferred to announce the news at a more respectful hour, they were compelled to act due to external leaks.
Postecoglou's availability made him an appealing choice, particularly given his longstanding positive relationship with Marinakis, which dates back several years. They were together in July when Marinakis honored Postecoglou for becoming the first Greek coach to win a major European club trophy.
Postecoglou arrives at Nottingham Forest after concluding a successful spell at Tottenham, where he ended a 17-year trophy drought with a victory over Manchester United. However, he was let go after a disappointing league campaign that saw the team finish 17th.
Forest's statement welcoming Postecoglou emphasized his credentials to help the club challenge for trophies, marking a new chapter after the progress made under Nuno and the foundations laid by Steve Cooper.
Reactions from the Squad
Players, many of whom are currently on international duty, expressed surprise at the managerial changes, as Nuno had provided opportunities for many to advance their careers.
Some received calls and messages from teammates reacting to the news, and they will return to training this week to embark on this new era.
Nuno fostered a close-knit environment, and squad members often engaged in activities together rather than rushing home after media commitments. The bond within the team was evident, and Postecoglou's challenge will be to maintain and build upon that unity.
It will not be easy for the 51-year-old, given Nuno's popularity among players and fans alike. Postecoglou must work to win over supporters who cherished Nuno, although he himself faced a similar task when he took over from Cooper in December 2023.
Despite Tottenham's challenging season, Postecoglou's first campaign ended with a fifth-place finish and a Europa League title. His approach, which emphasizes pressing and possession, contrasts with Nuno's effective counter-attacking style.
Recent signings, including record buy Omari Hutchinson, £30 million attacker James McAtee, and striker Arnaud Kalimuendo, add to a squad that already features England internationals Morgan Gibbs-White and Elliot Anderson, along with last season's top scorer Chris Wood.
Former Celtic manager Chris Sutton believes Postecoglou will succeed at Forest, highlighting his ability to improve teams and win trophies across various leagues. He stated, "People are quick to forget that when he first went to Spurs, he really improved the team... I’m sure he will go to Forest and change things in a big, big way."
