O'Neill Disappointed with Officials After Northern Ireland's Loss to Germany
Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill expressed his disappointment with the match officials following his team's 1-0 defeat against Germany in World Cup qualifying.
Newcastle United striker Nick Woltemade scored the only goal of the match in the first half, marking his first goal for Germany.
However, O'Neill was frustrated by referee Jesus Gil Manzano's decision to allocate just two minutes of injury time despite eight substitutions during the match. He also raised concerns about several other decisions made by the Spanish official.
"I found it incredible to only add two minutes at the end of the game given the number of substitutions and stoppages," O'Neill told BBC Sport NI's Gavin Andrews. "Germany were overly dramatic when they went down and engaged in time-wasting, so we are disappointed with the performance of the officials."
'We couldn't have asked for any more'
O'Neill, overseeing his 100th match as manager of Northern Ireland, praised his players for their effort but lamented the poor defending on the corner that allowed Woltemade to score, as the ball fortuitously bounced off his shoulder into the net.
Dan Ballard had a goal disallowed in the first half, while players such as Jamie Reid, Ethan Galbraith, and Callum Marshall came close to scoring as Northern Ireland pressed Germany in the final quarter of the match.
"In the first half, we lacked a bit of belief with the ball, but we were still in the game and not conceding many chances," he added. "The goal was a freak occurrence; it came off his shoulder, and we should have defended it better. In the second half, we were very much in the game. It's a match we should have taken the lead in; we had a goal disallowed for offside that shouldn't have been offside. We had a couple of chances towards the end, but Justin [Devenny] didn't settle himself to take a shot, and Callum forced the goalkeeper into a save. We were a bit fatigued towards the end, but we couldn't have asked for any more, and it's disappointing to lose the game."
This defeat leaves Northern Ireland in third place in Group A, trailing Germany and Slovakia by three points. They will conclude their campaign with an away match against Slovakia and a home game against Luxembourg next month.
O'Neill acknowledged that the upcoming trip to Košice is crucial, stating that it is essential not to lose in order to remain in contention for a second-place finish in the group and a potential playoff spot. "I haven't really analyzed it yet, but we will hope that four points will suffice next month. However, we must ensure we are not beaten in Slovakia so that we have something to play for," he said.
