Only three managers have led the Northern Ireland men's team to a major tournament: Peter Doherty, Billy Bingham, and the current manager, Michael O'Neill, all revered for guiding the team to either the World Cup or European Championships. However, Ian Baraclough, who was in just his sixth match as manager, narrowly missed adding his name to that list during a Euro 2020 playoff against Slovakia at Windsor Park.
After a tense penalty shootout victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina, hopes were high when Kyle Lafferty shot from distance in the 90th minute, only for his attempt to strike the outside of the post and roll away harmlessly. Slovakia eventually secured their spot at Euro 2020 with a late goal from Michal Duris in extra time.
“The width of a post can change outcomes and careers,” Baraclough reflected. “Moments from that match linger with me. Their winning goal came off Johnny Evans' backside, and I still believe we should have won. What could have been?”
“We Were in Transition, So We Had to Adapt”
Baraclough's tenure was extended due to delays in the international football calendar caused by Covid-19, which allowed him to oversee the playoff. Michael O'Neill had originally planned to finish the qualifying campaign before focusing on his new role at Stoke City. Baraclough acknowledged that had the outcome against Slovakia been different, it might still have been seen as O'Neill's team.
After missing out on what would have been Northern Ireland's second consecutive European Championships, Baraclough focused on developing a “younger, more dynamic team.” Previously managing the under-21 side, he had achieved a significant victory against Spain. Under his leadership, 12 players made their senior debuts, including Dan Ballard, who played in Baraclough's first match in charge, a 1-1 draw against Romania in September 2020.
Baraclough recognized the challenges of integrating young talent into the senior squad, understanding that results might suffer during the transition. “It was a risk to give them game time even before they were playing club football,” he noted. “We faced teams like Kosovo, and I realized their players were competing at a much higher level, but we were in transition, so we had to push forward.”
“It Was Disappointing Not to Compete in Major Tournaments”
Despite receiving a new contract through Euro 2024, Baraclough was dismissed after a record of six wins and eight draws from 28 matches, with O'Neill returning to the role. “There were moments when we would applaud the fans, but their frustration was evident due to our results,” Baraclough recalled. “I believed in the long-term vision of this project, even though I was disappointed not to lead the team into a World Cup or a Euros.”
Baraclough has since enjoyed watching many of his former players thrive at the international level. “The fans might have expected more from the previous campaign, but it takes time to build a competitive team,” he stated. “This current World Cup campaign is where we can see this group begin to make an impact, with players gaining valuable experience.”
“It’s rewarding to see these players succeed. I take pride in having contributed to their development as both individuals and players,” he added.
“I Am Grateful for the Support I Received”
Since April, Baraclough has been the sporting director at Partick Thistle in the Scottish Championship, where he is working to build a “younger, more dynamic” squad reminiscent of his time with Northern Ireland. The team is currently second in the table, six points behind leaders St. Johnstone, with a game in hand.
Baraclough's previous season ended dramatically when he suffered an accident on his honeymoon, which left him fearing he might never walk again. However, he has since recovered and is focused on leading Partick Thistle to success.
