Republic of Ireland assistant head coach John O'Shea has confirmed that strikers Evan Ferguson and Troy Parrott are both in contention to play in Saturday's World Cup qualifier against Portugal.
Ferguson had been a concern due to an ankle injury that kept him as an unused substitute during Roma's Serie A victory over Fiorentina last weekend. However, O'Shea noted that Ferguson participated in almost all training sessions leading up to the match.
Parrott, who recently returned to the field after a knee injury, came off the bench in AZ Alkmaar's Eredivisie win over Telstar. O'Shea commented on Parrott's fitness, stating, "There's every chance, but you also have to respect the kind of injuries he's had. We prioritize the player's health and will make a decision closer to kick-off. The signs are very positive; his strength, power, and speed are all looking good."
Before his injury, the 23-year-old Parrott was in outstanding form, having scored 10 goals in just seven matches across the Eredivisie and UEFA Conference League qualifying rounds. O'Shea praised Parrott's commitment, saying, "Troy has been doing everything right on and off the pitch to be the best professional he can be, which has likely contributed to his quicker recovery from an injury that could have sidelined him for longer. It's fantastic to see him back, especially given his contributions prior to the injury. His attacking talent is crucial for our team."
The Republic of Ireland's qualification hopes took a significant hit following a surprising defeat to Armenia in Yerevan last month. After facing Portugal in Lisbon, Heimir Hallgrimsson's side will host Armenia in Dublin on Tuesday.
