Potters Bar Town Manager Hospitalized After Altercation, Match Postponed
A man has been arrested following an altercation that resulted in the manager of Potters Bar Town requiring medical treatment, leading to the postponement of their match against Welling United.
Both clubs announced less than 40 minutes before the scheduled 15:00 GMT kick-off that the Isthmian League game was postponed.
Potters Bar Town confirmed that manager Sammy Moore was receiving "appropriate medical care" and was being supported by the club.
The Metropolitan Police informed BBC Sport that they were alerted to the incident at Welling's Park View Road at 13:18 GMT.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police stated, "Police were called to Welling Football Club following reports of an altercation between two men. Officers attended and found a 38-year-old man with injuries to his face. A 42-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and remains in custody."
Potters Bar Town told BBC Sport that the game was postponed "following a serious incident involving a member of our management team." They added, "Police attended the ground and, following their involvement, the match was unable to proceed. Our manager is receiving appropriate medical care and the club is supporting him fully. The matter has been referred to the relevant authorities, including the league and the FA, and we are seeking formal advice. As this is now subject to ongoing processes, the club will not be making any further comment at this time. We thank supporters for their understanding."
BBC Sport understands that the Football Association is investigating the incident.
In their announcement regarding the postponement, Welling United stated, "The club will be making no further comment at this time. Further news regarding the rearranged fixture will be communicated in due course." Welling United has been contacted by BBC Sport for additional comments.
Nick Robinson, chair of the Isthmian League, told BBC Sport, "The league is aware of this matter and is awaiting the written reports of the alleged incident. We cannot comment further at this time."
The Isthmian League is the seventh tier of English football, with Potters Bar Town currently at the bottom of the table and Welling United two places above them in 20th position.
