Qarabag Achieves Historic Back-to-Back Champions League Wins
Qarabag made history by becoming the first Azerbaijani team to secure consecutive victories in the Champions League, defeating Copenhagen.
Captain Abdellah Zoubir opened the scoring in the 28th minute, capitalizing on a rebound after Pedro Bicalho's shot hit the woodwork.
Former Southampton forward Mohamed Elyounoussi nearly equalized shortly after, but his effort went wide as the Danish side pressed forward on a counterattack.
The match was effectively settled in the 83rd minute when substitute Emmanuel Addai found the bottom corner from the edge of the box, doubling Qarabag's lead.
Zoubir had the opportunity to score earlier when his shot clipped the side-netting after Copenhagen's full-back Rodrigo Huescas was dispossessed.
Copenhagen's goalkeeper Dominik Kotarski made two remarkable saves in quick succession, first pushing Oleksii Kashchuk's curling effort wide, then leaping to deny Zoubir's header that was destined for the top corner.
Leandro Andrade's powerful shot was blocked by Marcos Lopez as Qarabag continued to control the first half.
After halftime, Copenhagen began to find their rhythm, with Jordan Larsson's header saved and Gabriel Pereira's header striking the crossbar just moments before Addai's goal sealed the victory.
With this win, Qarabag follows their earlier triumph over Benfica, marking Azerbaijan as the 24th nation to have a team win consecutive Champions League matches, the first new addition since Moldova's Sheriff Tiraspol achieved the feat in 2021.
Qurban Qurbanov's squad will face Athletic Club in their next Champions League match on October 22 at 17:45 BST, while Copenhagen will host Borussia Dortmund the day before at 20:00 BST.
