Rangers Fail to Secure Victory Against Dundee in Scottish Premiership
Rangers head coach Russell Martin is still in search of his first Scottish Premiership victory after a late penalty from club captain James Tavernier salvaged a draw against Dundee, preventing the visitors from claiming their first win at Ibrox in 24 years.
This result marks the first time since 1989 that Rangers have failed to win in their opening two league matches.
Ryan Astley’s impressive second-half header from a well-executed free-kick appeared to set Dundee on course for a significant victory under new head coach Steven Pressley. However, Rangers, reduced to ten men after defender Nasser Djiga was sent off for a foul on Fin Robertson, rallied to equalize when Tavernier converted a penalty after Djeidi Gassama was brought down.
The home crowd expressed their frustration at various moments during the match, dissatisfied with the team's pace and intensity, even booing the substitutions of Nico Raskin and Kieran Dowell after the break.
Dundee showed a marked improvement from their previous performances, where they had struggled against Airdrieonians and Alloa Athletic in the League Cup group stage, and had fallen behind early in their last Premiership match against Hibernian.
Well-organized defensively and effective on the counter-attack, Dundee managed to withstand the pressure from Rangers throughout the match.
Rangers’ performance was a stark contrast to their vibrant display in the Champions League qualifying match against Viktoria Plzen.
The situation could have been worse for Rangers had Clark Robertson’s header in the first half not hit the post instead of finding the net. Former England goalkeeper Jack Butland was relieved to see the ball bounce into his arms in front of the Copland Stand.
A similar scenario unfolded shortly after, with another header from Robertson being tipped onto the same post by Butland, although this time the defender was ruled offside.
Rangers did manage to force visiting goalkeeper Jon McCracken into a few decent saves in the second half and showed determination despite being a man down, but their efforts lacked the quality needed to secure a win.
If Dundee continues to perform at this level, Pressley’s assertion that they will be “OK” will likely prove to be an understatement.
Rangers will take some solace in securing a point with ten men, nearly clinching all three points if a VAR review had not ruled a Cyriel Dessers goal offside, leading to familiar sounds of discontent from the home fans.
What was the talking point?
The pressing question ahead of the match was whether Rangers could rebound from their disappointing start against Motherwell. Unfortunately for their supporters, the answer was a definitive “no.” This result could mark a significant moment for Dundee, while it poses early challenges for Martin’s tenure at Rangers, especially with rivals Celtic set to play against Aberdeen on Sunday.
At half-time, it was evident that Rangers were struggling to penetrate a disciplined and organized Dundee side, reminiscent of their prior league struggles.
Credit goes to Pressley and his team, who, despite a rocky start to the season, demonstrated their potential in the first half and could have easily taken the lead before the break.
Who were the key players?
While many players in white performed admirably, special recognition goes to defenders Ryan Astley, Clark Robertson, and Luke Graham. Astley and Robertson combined effectively for Dundee’s goal and showcased strong performances throughout the match, while Graham proved to be a solid presence in defense.
Filled with energy, bravery, and commitment, Dundee looked like a transformed side compared to their earlier lackluster performances this season.
What’s next?
Rangers will turn their attention back to Champions League qualifying, facing Viktoria Plzen away on Tuesday at 18:00 BST, where they will defend a 3-0 lead.
Dundee, meanwhile, will have to wait for their next match after being eliminated from the Premier Sports Cup. They are set to face Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Saturday, August 23, at 15:00.
