Reading FC Faces Relegation Threat After Draw with Exeter City
Reading FC has fallen into the League One relegation zone following a draw against Exeter City, a match overshadowed by a stoppage due to reports of discriminatory chanting from the stands.
The game was halted in the 74th minute, resulting in 13 minutes of stoppage time, but neither team was able to secure a winning goal.
Reading initially took the lead when Jack Marriott capitalized on a mistake by Johnly Yfeko in the sixth minute, marking his sixth consecutive game with a goal.
However, Exeter equalized just five minutes later when Jayden Wareham scored from close range against his former club, in a first half that Exeter largely controlled.
Reading improved significantly in the second half and came close to regaining the lead, with Marriott, Matt Ritchie, and Matty Jacob all having chances to score.
This draw, combined with victories for Burton Albion and Wycombe Wanderers, saw Reading drop to 21st place in the league standings, while Exeter moved up to 16th.
Marriott showcased his experience by intercepting Yfeko's back-post header and skillfully slipping the ball through goalkeeper Joe Whitworth's legs in the fifth minute.
Exeter's equalizer was well-deserved, coming from a low pass by Reece Cole deep in the right side of the Reading box, which Wareham blasted home during his first match against Reading since his transfer to Devon.
The Grecians demonstrated impressive one-touch football in midfield and could have taken the lead earlier, with Cole forcing a good save from Reading's Joel Pereira.
Exeter captain Pierce Sweeney narrowly missed scoring when he headed over from the far post after Wareham just missed connecting with a Danny Andrew cross, as the hosts continued to impress before halftime.
In the second half, Reading took control, with Marriott missing a golden opportunity to put them ahead in the 58th minute, shooting over the bar from 10 yards after former Exeter loanee Kamari Doyle broke free down the right flank.
Yfeko then blocked a header from Ritchie just two minutes later, while Jacob also failed to convert from a similar distance shortly thereafter.
