Real Madrid Coach Xabi Alonso Faces Pressure Amidst Poor Form
Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso has emphasized that the team is united in their efforts to overcome a challenging period, stating, "We are all together in this," from the dressing room to the boardroom.
Alonso, who previously managed Bayer Leverkusen, was appointed in the summer to succeed Carlo Ancelotti on a three-year contract. However, he is already facing pressure after just six months in charge.
The team suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat at home to Celta Vigo on Sunday and has managed only one win in their last five La Liga matches, falling four points behind league leaders Barcelona.
Real Madrid will host Premier League champions Manchester City in the Champions League group stage on Wednesday, aiming to reverse their recent struggles.
In a pre-match news conference, Alonso remarked, "We are all on the same boat. We have to go through positive and negative times. We need to believe that the next game is an opportunity, and tomorrow we have a very exciting match ahead. We must stay focused to ensure that the Bernabeu enjoys the game. That emotional bond is crucial for us tomorrow."
Last week, Alonso met with club president Florentino Perez as speculation about his future intensified. According to BBC Sport's Guillem Balague, Alonso's chances of retaining his position are "slim," and a loss to City could mark the end of his brief tenure.
Despite the pressure, Alonso believes the board is supportive, stating, "Communication is constant. We have unity; we are all together in this, and I maintain a good relationship with them."
Alonso Reflects on Liverpool Connection
Alonso, a former midfielder for Liverpool, has not played for or managed an English club since his move to Real Madrid in 2009. The current Liverpool manager, Arne Slot, is also under scrutiny as the reigning champions struggle this season, compounded by star player Mohamed Salah's recent controversial interview.
At 44, Alonso remains a beloved figure at Liverpool and left the door open for a potential return to the Premier League, stating, "There is definitely a bond with my former club, but for now, this is my place. In the future, you never know what might happen." When asked about the possibility of being replaced by former manager Zinedine Zidane or Real Madrid B team coach Alvaro Arbeloa, Alonso replied, "As the coach of Real Madrid, you must be prepared for these situations, and my focus is solely on the upcoming game."
