Republic of Ireland winger Chedozie Ogbene has shared insights on his journey after recovering from a nine-month Achilles tendon injury, stating that the experience has given him a new perspective on life.

The 28-year-old athlete suffered the injury while playing for Ipswich Town during a Premier League match against Brentford in October last year, which resulted in him missing the remainder of the season as the club faced relegation. However, Ogbene believes that the time spent on the sidelines allowed him to grow both personally and professionally, and he would willingly endure the injury again for the knowledge gained.

"Knowing what I know now, if I could go back nine months, I would rupture my Achilles again. I am much wiser now, and I acquired a lot of knowledge during my injury period," he remarked. "I’m a different person; I no longer fear many things and I feel a greater sense of gratitude."

Since his recovery, Ogbene has joined Championship side Sheffield United, and he dedicated significant time to understanding his body and analyzing game footage to enhance his physical and tactical readiness for the upcoming season.

"Watching a lot of football for nine months has been educational. When you are in the thick of it, everything moves at a rapid pace, and the manager's instructions can be hard to grasp. Observing from the sidelines provided me with invaluable insights," he explained.

Ogbene also consulted with teammates John Egan and Gavin Bazunu, who had previously experienced Achilles injuries, to gain insights into their rehabilitation journeys. This guidance contributed to a smooth and successful recovery process. "I’m delighted that my hard work has paid off; I had an excellent pre-season and feel fitter and stronger than ever, which excites me for the upcoming matches," he added.

As the Republic of Ireland embarks on their World Cup qualifying campaign, Ogbene aims to add to his 24 international caps. The team will host Hungary this Saturday before traveling to Armenia on Tuesday, with Ogbene setting his sights on securing two victories to kickstart their Group F journey.

"I hope everyone approaches these matches with the mindset of aiming for six points. That’s how both the manager and I view it. While I want to achieve at least four points, I’m not here to settle for that," Ogbene stated. "I believe we can defeat Hungary and Armenia if we execute our game plan effectively. The energy in training has been fantastic, and I have a strong feeling about this camp."
