Richard Kone: From Homelessness to International Football Star
Less than two years ago, Richard Kone was playing in the ninth tier of English football. Today, he proudly represents the Ivory Coast on the international stage.
The Queens Park Rangers striker's incredible journey is highlighted by the fact that he experienced homelessness at the age of 16.
In 2019, Kone was struggling to survive on the streets of Abidjan.
If selected for the national team again this summer, he will compete in the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
From living on the streets to earning his first international cap, and from playing in step five of non-league football to winning the League One Player of the Year award and making the leap to the Championship, the 22-year-old's journey has been nothing short of remarkable.
The Turning Point
"Being homeless in my country is incredibly challenging," Kone reflected on his experiences sleeping rough in Abidjan, a coastal city in Ivory Coast.
"Many people won’t engage with you when you ask for a bit of help or money."
Fortunately, a friend recognized Kone's potential and introduced him to the president of the Don’t Forget Them Association, a street soccer initiative in Ivory Coast.
Through hard work and daily training, Kone earned the opportunity to represent his country at the Homeless World Cup in Cardiff in 2019.
This tournament marked his first trip abroad and his first time flying, ultimately serving as a pivotal moment in Kone's football career.
Chance Encounter Gets the Ball Rolling
Following the Homeless World Cup, a 16-year-old Kone relocated to Hackney in east London.
It was there that a chance encounter led him to sign with non-league club Athletic Newham in the Eastern Counties League Division One South, the 10th tier of English football.
"Richard Kone's journey with Athletic Newham began in the most unexpected place: Hackney Marshes," said Athletic Newham chairman Kennedy Tavares in an interview with BBC Sport.
"I spotted him playing football alone, and something about him immediately stood out. I invited him to train with our team, and from that moment on, we never looked back. What followed was an incredible period at the club."
Kone made an instant impact, scoring a hat-trick on his debut against Fire United in September 2019.
"It was the perfect introduction to a player who would go on to define an era for us," Tavares added.
Over his first two seasons, Kone scored 25 goals in 40 matches, helping Athletic Newham secure promotion to the Essex Senior League in 2021.
His goal-scoring ability continued to flourish, netting 82 goals in 90 matches over the next two seasons.
By the end of the 2022-23 season, professional clubs began to take notice of Kone's prolific scoring. That summer, League One club Wycombe Wanderers invited him for an extended trial.
In the following months, Kone scored another 18 goals in 18 games for Athletic Newham before signing with Wycombe in January 2024 at the age of 20.
The rest, as they say, is history.
Kone made headlines in his first full season at Wycombe, scoring the club's fastest-ever EFL hat-trick in just nine minutes during a 3-1 victory over Peterborough in October 2024.
He concluded the season with 21 goals across all competitions, including 18 league goals and three assists, helping Wycombe reach the play-off semi-finals.
'I Wouldn't Have Thought of This Two Years Ago'
His outstanding performances earned him both the League One Player and Young Player of the Season awards at the EFL Awards for 2024-25, along with a spot in the Team of the Season.
"This is an unbelievable achievement," Kone stated to BBC Sport after the EFL Awards in April. "I wouldn’t have imagined this two years ago. To be here winning two awards and being named in the Team of the Season is simply amazing. I am incredibly proud of myself and just enjoying the moment."
'Humble... and a Very Impressive Goalscorer'
Kone's ascent to becoming one of the most in-demand strikers in the EFL has been described as "nothing short of remarkable" by BBC Three Counties Radio commentator Sam Avery.
"He was brought in as an unknown player from the ninth tier, but Kone quickly established himself as a key player and an impressive goalscorer," Avery noted. "He remained extremely humble during his time at Wycombe, even under the spotlight, taking everything in stride and demonstrating maturity beyond his years."
Kone's character has remained consistent throughout his career, regardless of where he plays. "Richard is the type of player who simply loves the game. He is always eager to learn and open to advice from coaches and anyone around the club. His attitude, hunger, and humility made him a joy to work with," Tavares shared.
QPR Move and Ivory Coast Debut
After an impressive 18 months at Wycombe, several Championship clubs expressed interest in Kone, and in August, Queens Park Rangers secured his signature.
As has been the case throughout Kone's remarkable journey, another significant milestone was just ahead: his first call-up to the Ivory Coast national team.
Three months after joining QPR, Kone received the call every player dreams of, making his international debut as a substitute in a 2-0 friendly victory against Oman in Al-Seeb on November 18.
"That’s why I play football, to represent my country at the international level," Kone remarked in an interview with the Rising Ballers YouTube channel after signing with QPR. "Afcon, maybe the World Cup… that’s why I am always striving to be the best so I can earn a call-up."
Tavares expressed that everyone at Athletic Newham "always knew Kone had something special."
"His progress comes as no surprise to those who saw him every day, and he has finally earned the opportunity he deserves. It’s a remarkable journey, and we are proud to have been part of it."
Kone has not forgotten his beginnings at the Homeless World Cup six years ago, describing the experience as "life-changing."
"It provided me with the platform to grow and set me on the career path to where I am today," he reflected.
Organizers of the Homeless World Cup have expressed their pride in Kone's journey from non-league football to becoming an international player. "Richard’s story exemplifies the true potential of every player who comes through our tournament. With opportunity, support, and belief, extraordinary achievements are possible."
