Ronaldo Shines in Portugal's 5-0 Victory Over Armenia
Cristiano Ronaldo delivered a standout performance for Portugal, scoring twice in an emotional 5-0 victory over Armenia in their first match since the tragic death of Diogo Jota.
Prior to kick-off at the Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium, a minute of silence was observed in memory of Liverpool forward Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who lost their lives in a car accident in July.
Joao Felix opened the scoring for Portugal in the 10th minute of the World Cup qualifier, followed by Ronaldo, who netted his first goal in the 21st minute, wearing the same number that Jota had donned for the national team.
“We’re all very happy because it shows he’s [Jota] with us, that he was there, and that moment, Ronaldo’s goal, was made possible,” said left-back Nuno Tavares. “He’ll always be with us, as was clear today.”
Joao Cancelo extended the lead to 3-0 before Ronaldo scored his second with a spectacular long-range shot, bringing his international goal tally to 140.
Felix capped off the dominant performance with his second goal shortly after the hour mark.
