Scotland's World Cup Qualifying Campaign: A Strong Start and Upcoming Challenges
Steve Clarke has expressed his focus on the upcoming match against Greece at Hampden, following Scotland's impressive start in World Cup qualifying, where they secured four points from their first two games.
Scotland's 2-0 victory over Belarus in Hungary on Monday complemented a hard-fought goalless draw against Denmark on Friday, placing Scotland level with Denmark in Group C.
Greece, who suffered a surprising 3-0 defeat to Denmark in Athens, trail Scotland by one point and are set to face them in Glasgow on October 9.
Scotland will also host Belarus three days later, before concluding the qualifying campaign with an away match in Greece and a home game against Denmark in November, as they aim to return to the World Cup for the first time in 28 years.
Clarke commented to BBC Scotland, "It’s a good start, a solid start. Four points will never qualify you for anything. It’s nice to go home with a smile on your face, but I’m already thinking about next month."
Confidence Boost for Scotland
Clarke is not alone in looking ahead, as the Tartan Army begins to dream of a return to football's biggest stage next summer. After a challenging period in the spring and summer, the draw in Copenhagen has set Scotland up well. Although the performance against Belarus was not particularly flashy, it was professional and yielded a crucial result.
Che Adams' goal just before half-time eased the tension, and his assist led to an own goal that secured the victory in a match played behind closed doors in Hungary. Despite Belarus posing limited threats, goalkeeper Angus Gunn made only one significant save, welcoming a third consecutive clean sheet for Clarke.
Clarke emphasized the importance of a strong defensive foundation, stating, "Clean sheets are what we have to build our campaign on. If we can keep the ball out of the net, we’ve always got enough to score one or two goals." Under Clarke’s management, Scotland has not often overwhelmed opponents but has been effective in maintaining a solid base and capitalizing on key opportunities.
Former Scotland captain Scott Brown remarked on Sportscene, "It’s going to give the whole team a lot of confidence. There were four changes as well, which shows he can manipulate the squad well too. That’s credit to Steve. He’s not going to 4-3-3, full throttle; he’s always been about ensuring his defensive unit is solid, having structure in midfield, and taking opportunities when they arise."
Greece Remains a Threat
While there is justified optimism following a solid start to the campaign, caution is warranted. Despite Greece’s recent loss to Denmark, Scotland is aware of the dangers they pose. In the Nations League playoffs last March, Greece overturned a 1-0 first-leg deficit to win 3-0 in the second leg at Hampden.
Club Brugge winger Christos Tzolis, who scored in that match, along with teenage sensation Konstantinos Karetsas, are among Greece's key players. The Greeks will be eager to reignite their campaign after their disappointing home defeat.
Former Scotland forward James McFadden noted on Sportscene, "We’re in a great position. The squad and mood are in a good place. They defended well as a team on Friday; it’s a team that is united and fighting for each other. They’ll be confident going into the next double-header."
