Forward Rasmus Hojlund has traveled with the Denmark squad for the crucial World Cup qualifier against Scotland, while teammate Anders Dreyer has been left behind due to illness.
The 22-year-old Hojlund missed Saturday's 2-2 draw against Belarus, which saw Denmark lose an opportunity to secure top spot and qualification for next summer's finals. However, head coach Brian Riemer reported that Hojlund is feeling better and ready to contribute. "He’s doing well now; he feels fresh and ready for the fight," Riemer stated.
Despite his recovery, Riemer mentioned that Hojlund has been training alone and may not have his usual energy. A decision on whether he will start or come off the bench will be made closer to kick-off.
Winger Anders Dreyer, 27, did not make the trip to Scotland after waking up feeling unwell. Riemer explained, "I had to take the decision with my doctor to leave him back home."
In their previous encounter during the opening round of qualifying, Denmark and Scotland played to a 0-0 draw in Copenhagen. Riemer emphasized the importance of the upcoming match, stating, "We play for a World Cup ticket tomorrow. What happened in the first game, or in the subsequent matches, is irrelevant at this stage." He added that the team must not dwell on past performances, especially after the draw with Belarus.
Riemer praised Scotland's head coach Steve Clarke for his achievements over the past several years, including qualifying for the last two European Championships. "We have a great deal of respect for our opponent tomorrow, but we also have a lot of belief in ourselves," he noted.
Riemer anticipates an exciting match, saying, "I expect a game with two teams that will obviously go for the win and the big prize, and hopefully an entertaining match. This is a huge, huge fight."
