Scott Carson Announces Retirement After 21-Year Career
Former Manchester City goalkeeper Scott Carson has announced his retirement after a distinguished 21-year professional career.
The 40-year-old concluded his six-year tenure with the club this summer when his contract expired, during which he secured four Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy under the management of Pep Guardiola.
Carson played for a total of 10 clubs, beginning his professional journey with Leeds United in 2004, and earned four caps for the England national team.
In an Instagram post, he expressed, "After an incredible journey between the posts, it’s time to hang up the gloves. Football has given me everything - memories, friendships, and moments I’ll never forget. Thank you to every teammate, coach, fan, and club that’s been part of my ride. It’s been an honour."
During his career, Carson was also part of Liverpool's squad that won the Champions League, FA Cup, and Super Cup. He made over 100 appearances for both Derby County and West Bromwich Albion.
However, it was at Manchester City where he experienced significant success, including the Treble of Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League in 2023, after initially joining on loan from Derby in 2019.
Despite playing only 117 minutes as the third-choice goalkeeper behind Ederson and Stefan Ortega, Carson became a cult hero among the fans. His final competitive appearance came as a late substitute during a Champions League last-16 second-leg match against Sporting in March 2022.
Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji, currently on loan at Inter Milan, referred to Carson as an "absolute legend" in response to his retirement announcement, while former teammate Fernandinho called him "The Goat." Norwegian striker Erling Haaland also shared his sentiments, writing, "Miss you pal, all the best."
Derby County, where Carson spent six years, took to Instagram to wish him well, stating, "Wishing all the best to Scott Carson. Congratulations on a magnificent career, Scott."
