Senegal Advances to Semi-Finals of 2025 Africa Cup of Nations
Iliman Ndiaye's first-half tap-in secured Senegal's victory over 10-man Mali, allowing them to advance to the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).
The Everton forward capitalized on a mistake by Mali goalkeeper Djigui Diarra, converting a low cross from Krepin Diatta from just five yards out.
In first-half injury time, Diarra managed to tip a shot from El Hadji Malick Diouf onto the crossbar, moments before Mali's captain and Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma received a second yellow card and was sent off.
Senegal's goalkeeper Edouard Mendy thwarted a chance from Abdoulaye Diaby in the second half. Diarra, on the other hand, made notable saves against Sadio Mane and Pathe Ciss.
Ciss had another opportunity to extend Senegal's lead but shot directly at Diarra after taking advantage of a defensive error. In the dying minutes, Diarra also managed to deflect Lassine Camara's dipping volley onto the right post.
Mali exits the tournament winless, suffering from repeated disciplinary issues that culminated in a third consecutive match with a player sent off.
The Eagles will be relieved to see the end of referee Abongile Tom's involvement, who officiated their last-16 match against Tunisia, where Woyo Coulibaly received a straight red card.
Senegal will learn their semi-final opponent on Saturday when record seven-time champions Egypt face the reigning champions, Ivory Coast, at 19:00 GMT.
