Senegal Dominates Botswana in 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Opener
Two goals from Nicolas Jackson propelled Senegal to a convincing 3-0 victory over Botswana in their opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).
The Group D match in Tangier was played under heavy rain, which hindered Botswana's ability to respond as the 2021 champions launched continuous attacks.
Botswana's goalkeeper, Goitseone Phoko, made an impressive case for player of the match during the first half, successfully blocking attempts from notable players such as Sadio Mane and Iliman Ndiaye.
However, five minutes before halftime, Jackson capitalized on a precise left-wing cross from full-back Ismail Jakobs, scoring after finding himself unmarked in the box.
The Chelsea striker, currently on loan at Bayern Munich, netted his second goal with a tidy finish in the 58th minute. Substitute Cherif Ndiaye sealed the victory with a goal in the final minute of regular time.
Botswana, who have yet to win a match at Afcon, posed little threat to their opponents and will need to improve significantly against Benin in Rabat on Saturday at 12:30 GMT if they hope to break their winless streak.
Senegal now tops Group D on goal difference, ahead of DR Congo, whom they will face again in Tangier on the same day at 15:00 GMT.
