Southampton Secures Fourth Consecutive Championship Win Against Leicester City
Southampton continued their impressive form under interim manager Tonda Eckert, achieving their fourth consecutive Championship victory with a comfortable win over 10-man Leicester City.
The Saints opened the scoring when Taylor Harwood-Bellis headed the ball into the net from a Ryan Manning free-kick.
Finn Azaz doubled the lead shortly after, receiving a pass from Leo Scienza before curling the ball into the net at the near post.
Leicester's Olabade Aluko was sent off before half-time after receiving a second yellow card for a reckless challenge on Tom Fellows.
Taking advantage of their numerical superiority, Southampton extended their lead just before the break as Harwood-Bellis scored again, this time heading in from a Manning corner.
The victory positions Southampton just two points shy of the playoff spots, while Leicester drops to 13th place on goal difference.
Southampton took the lead after 20 minutes when Manning delivered a curling free-kick from the left, which Harwood-Bellis headed past goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.
Leicester nearly equalized immediately, but Gavin Bazunu managed to keep out a header from Jordan James with a quick dive.
Azaz, who has been in excellent form, was played into the box by Scienza and finished neatly, marking his third consecutive goal in the Championship.
Aluko's sending off occurred in the 33rd minute during his second senior appearance for Leicester, after he pulled down Fellows as he attempted to break down the right wing.
Just before halftime, Southampton added to their lead with Manning's inswinging corner, which was again headed home by Harwood-Bellis.
After the break, Southampton continued to press for more goals, but a struggling Leicester side managed to limit the damage.
Leicester's inconsistent performance under manager Marti Cifuentes sees them drop three places in the table, and they have yet to win consecutive away games since February 2024.
'I’m happy to go on' - Eckert
In a post-match interview with BBC Sport, Southampton's interim manager Tonda Eckert expressed his satisfaction:
"I’m very pleased; we knew we needed to invest a lot today for a clean sheet, as there’s a lot of quality on the other side of the pitch, and we managed that quite well. I believe there was only one real moment they had inside our box during the game, which is a compliment to the boys over 90 minutes.
"I’m happy to go on and prepare for another game on Saturday; it’s going to be a big challenge, and we need to maintain our momentum. I want to go to Millwall and win again on Saturday. That’s what it’s about. I don’t look too far ahead; I’m focused on the upcoming match."
