St Johnstone Secures Narrow Victory Over Ross County in Scottish Championship
Substitute Uche Ikpeazu's late header secured a narrow but well-deserved victory for St Johnstone against fellow promotion contenders Ross County in the Scottish Championship.
Until that moment, the two relegated sides had effectively neutralized each other, but it is St Johnstone who now begin the league season with two consecutive wins.
The Perth team controlled possession for much of the first half, yet it was Ross County who recorded the first significant save, as midfielder Jay Henderson tested goalkeeper Toby Steward with a powerful shot shortly after the break.
Ikpeazu missed a clear opportunity by heading wide from just six yards out, while debutant James Scott, who joined along with center-back Alex Iacovitti from St Mirren earlier in the day, also saw a chance slip by as he glanced a shot just wide.
However, the match turned when home goalkeeper Ross Laidlaw failed to handle a free-kick delivered to the back post, allowing Ikpeazu to rise and head in his third goal of the season.
Fellow striker Adama Sidibeh appeared poised to add a second goal, but Laidlaw made a commendable save to touch the ball wide. Despite this, the goalkeeper's earlier error proved costly, granting St Johnstone their sixth consecutive win as they carry their League Cup momentum into the league.
For Ross County, this marks their third game without a victory, leaving them five points behind their title rivals.
