St Mirren Advances to Premier Sports Cup Quarter-Finals After Penalty Shootout Victory
St Mirren triumphed in a penalty shootout against Hearts to secure a place in the quarter-finals of the Premier Sports Cup following a closely contested match under the sunny skies of Paisley.
Shamal George's crucial save against Claudio Braga marked the only miss in the shootout, allowing the Buddies to avenge their previous penalty loss to Hearts in last season's Scottish Cup.
In the first half, Alex Gogic took advantage of poor marking from Hearts, executing an acrobatic volley to put the hosts ahead, assisted by Declan John’s chipped cross.
St Mirren continued to press for a second goal, with Killian Phillips being denied by goalkeeper Zander Clark.
Hearts substitutes Braga and Lawrence Shankland both tested George, but it was Hearts who equalized in the 78th minute when Oisin McEntee headed home from a corner delivered by Harry Milne.
With neither team able to find the net during regulation or extra time, the match proceeded to penalties.
For Hearts, Shankland, Stephen Kingsley, Alan Forrest, and Beni Baningime successfully converted their penalties, but Braga, the third shooter, was unable to score against George.
In contrast, St Mirren's Richard King, Marcus Fraser, Jonah Ayunga, Evan Mooney, and Malik Dijksteel all converted their spot-kicks, achieving a perfect record from the penalty spot.
This victory further bolsters the momentum for the Paisley club, especially following the news that manager Stephen Robinson has signed a new contract to remain at the club until 2028.
