Steven Gerrard in Talks to Return as Rangers Head Coach
Steven Gerrard is set to engage in discussions with Rangers regarding a potential return as the club's head coach.
According to a report from BBC Sport on Tuesday, the Scottish Premiership club is open to reappointing Gerrard but is awaiting confirmation of his interest in returning to Ibrox.
Rangers will hold talks with Gerrard over the coming days as they seek to fill the vacancy left by the sacking of Russell Martin on Sunday.
Sources indicate that Gerrard is among several candidates the club wishes to interview, as they are committed to a thorough selection process.
However, it is evident that Gerrard, who enjoys considerable support among fans, is emerging as a leading contender for the position.
Gerrard previously managed Rangers from 2018 to 2021, during which he led the club to its first domestic title in a decade.
Since Gerrard's departure for Aston Villa in November 2021, Rangers have not reclaimed the championship title.
After finishing 14th in his first season with Aston Villa, Gerrard was dismissed just 12 matches into the following campaign.
In July 2023, he became the manager of Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq but parted ways by mutual consent in January. He was subsequently linked to the Rangers position prior to Martin's appointment in June.
In a recent interview with former England teammate Rio Ferdinand, Gerrard expressed his desire to return to management, emphasizing his wish to lead a team capable of competing for titles.
Martin managed to secure only five wins in 17 matches, leaving Rangers in eighth place, 11 points behind the league leaders, Hearts.
Gerrard mentioned on the Rio Ferdinand Presents Podcast that he had received "five or six really interesting phone calls" since leaving Saudi Arabia, but noted that the timing for a return had not yet been right.
