Steven Gerrard Declines Rangers Manager Position
Steven Gerrard has declined the opportunity to return to Rangers as manager for a second time, with the timing of the offer cited as a key factor in his surprising decision.
The former Liverpool and England captain engaged in discussions with the Scottish Premiership club earlier this week, following the dismissal of Russell Martin as head coach on Sunday.
While the talks were reportedly positive, the 45-year-old has chosen not to take up the role at this time. Although Gerrard remains open to a future return to Ibrox, both he and the club have agreed that it will not be in the immediate future.
Gerrard previously managed Rangers from 2018 to 2021, leading the team to victory in the Scottish Premiership during the 2020-21 season.
Despite expressing a desire to return to management after unsuccessful tenures with Aston Villa and Saudi club Al-Ettifaq, he withdrew from the interview process on Saturday.
This leaves the new Rangers management still in search of a head coach to replace Martin, who was in charge for just 17 matches after his appointment in June.
The team currently sits eighth in the Scottish top flight, having secured only one win in their first seven league matches. Their next fixture is against Dundee United next Saturday.
