Steven Naismith Returns to Scotland's Coaching Staff
Former Heart of Midlothian head coach Steven Naismith is rejoining Scotland's coaching staff after taking time away from management.
Naismith departed from Tynecastle 11 months ago following a challenging period that included eight consecutive defeats.
The 38-year-old, who has played for Kilmarnock, Rangers, Everton, Norwich, and Hearts, previously served as an assistant to Steve Clarke from 2021 to 2023 and earned 51 caps for Scotland during his playing career.
Naismith will take over as assistant coach from John Carver, who managed Lechia Gdansk, while Andrew Hughes has been appointed as set-piece coach.
“When I left Hearts, I was determined not to rush back into management but to reflect on my coaching experiences and wait for an opportunity that truly excited me,” Naismith stated.
“When I first discussed the possibility of returning with Steve, it was an obvious choice. I loved representing my country, enjoyed my previous role on the coaching team, and I am eager to support the mission of qualifying Scotland for another World Cup.”
Hughes expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “My father is Scottish, so this is a proud moment for me and my family. It’s an exciting time as a coach to be involved in a World Cup qualifying campaign with such a talented squad, especially after back-to-back Euro qualifications. I can’t wait to get started.”
Alan Irvine, who is currently an assistant at Everton and has managed Preston, Sheffield Wednesday, and West Brom, will continue to support Clarke.
Scotland will kick off their World Cup qualifying campaign with an away match against Denmark on September 5, followed by games against Belarus and Greece this autumn.
