Sunderland Triumphs in Premier League Tyne-Wear Derby
A new manager and a largely revamped team, yet Sunderland's recent victory over Newcastle will not be forgotten anytime soon.
Nearly two years ago, Newcastle celebrated a commanding 3-0 victory at the Stadium of Light during an FA Cup fourth-round match, capturing a full squad photo with their ecstatic supporters.
This time, it was Sunderland's turn to celebrate.
A solitary own goal from Nick Woltemade secured a memorable win for Sunderland in the first Premier League Tyne-Wear derby since 2016. The home side marked their victory by recreating Newcastle's celebratory photo from their previous encounter.
When asked about the idea to replicate the photo, Sunderland manager Regis le Bris smiled and remarked, "Always unpredictable, creative, adaptive."
Defender Dan Ballard, the only Sunderland player to feature in both matches, expressed his desire for redemption after the previous loss, telling Sky Sports, "You cannot describe the feeling. Losing to Newcastle was so painful for the players and the fans, and we felt we had let them down. We’re delighted with this win. It prepared us more for today. We came in with more quality in this team—real leaders. We fought hard and deserved the victory."
‘Derbies You Have to Win, No Matter How’
Sunderland, currently in seventh place, is enjoying a remarkable return to the top flight after being promoted via the play-offs last season. The Black Cats have amassed 26 points from 16 games, matching their highest total at this stage of a Premier League campaign since the 2000-01 season, when they ultimately finished seventh.
They remain unbeaten at the Stadium of Light this season, which buzzed with excitement throughout Sunday’s match.
Captain Granit Xhaka emphasized the importance of derby victories, stating, "Derbies, you have to win, it does not matter how. This team deserves much more respect; our position in the league is impressive, and we’re working really hard."
Sunderland is also on a ten-match unbeaten streak against Newcastle in league play, with seven wins and three draws, marking their longest run against the Magpies. Newcastle's last league victory over Sunderland dates back to August 2011.
Le Bris expressed his pride in the team's performance, stating, "I am proud and happy with the result. It was a derby, and our fans expected us to win. This victory is well-deserved; we showed maturity, and the lads were incredible. It's good for the region, the club, and the fans. We knew it was a special game, but we must quickly reset as we face another tough challenge against Brighton next week. Let’s go again."
