Terry Yorath: A Tribute to a Welsh Football Legend
Wales head coach Craig Bellamy has hailed the impact of Terry Yorath on Welsh football as "immeasurable."
Yorath, a former captain and manager of the Wales national team, passed away at the age of 75. He had an illustrious playing career with clubs such as Leeds United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Coventry City.
Serving as national team manager from 1988 to 1993, Yorath led Wales in their quest for qualification for the 1994 World Cup in the United States, narrowly missing out.
"As a country, we have so much to thank Terry for what he did," said Bellamy, who took on the role of Wales manager in July 2024.
Yorath captained Wales in 42 of his 59 international appearances and managed the team in an additional 41 matches. His managerial career also included two stints with Swansea City and a brief period at Cardiff City, alongside roles at Bradford City, Sheffield Wednesday, Margate, and the Lebanese national team.
"The impact Terry Yorath had on Welsh football is immeasurable," Bellamy reiterated.
Reflecting on his time as manager, Bellamy noted, "Terry epitomised everything it means to represent Wales as a player. Watching the 1994 World Cup qualifying campaign under his leadership gave me genuine belief that our country could qualify for a major tournament."
He extended his thoughts and condolences to Yorath's family and friends during this challenging time, stating, "Everyone in the Welsh football community will miss an incredible person."
Yorath's tenure saw Wales come within a win of reaching the 1994 World Cup finals, but the team fell short, losing 2-1 to Romania in Cardiff, marking his final match in charge.
Barry Horne, who captained Wales on that night, expressed his admiration on BBC Wales' Feast of Football podcast, saying, "He represented his country with immense pride and distinction. Terry took Wales from being uncompetitive to the brink of what could have been a glorious era for Welsh football. We had great players, balance, team spirit, and Terry deserves a lot of credit for that. He was a leader with a remarkable relationship with the players, and I owe him so much. He served his country through football brilliantly."
Iwan Roberts, a former striker for Watford, Leicester City, Norwich City, and Huddersfield Town, received his first senior cap from Yorath in 1989. "He was like a father figure to us all," Roberts recalled. "He was humble and had no ego despite his incredible career. He was a fantastic captain, manager, and player for Wales, but above all, he was a good person. We have lost a Welsh great."
